3 Ways to Build a Brand Voice That Stands Out and Sells

If you clicked on this article, you know how important it is to have your own unique brand voice in your business.

Whether you’re a copywriter, a coach, or any type of entrepreneur or business owner, a recognizable brand voice is what sets you apart and draws ideal clients to you like flies to cow pies.🍪

And yet…

You’re over here struggling to write consistent copy that resonates. You’re dreading getting your brand voice together. The biggest hurdle to converting copy is understanding and communicating the message behind the brand.

So I’ve put together the top 3 resources you can use to build that unique and consistent brand voice. I’ve also rated each one’s Effectiveness Level for your convenience.

1. Blogs, Guides, and Videos

You already know there are TONS of free resources from big name copywriters and digital marketers – Alex Cattoni, Hubspot, Neil Patel…and pretty much any digital marketing agency out there.

BUT I’ve spoken with at least 20 copywriters and entrepreneurs who haven’t been satisfied with those guides. Here are some of the most common issues:

  • The advice is too general – it tells you why you need a strong voice but doesn’t give specific advice on how to develop it.
  • The guide is too complicated – it goes into all these loopholes and rabbit holes and all kinds of holes and it just makes your head spin.
  • The guide doesn’t fit your industry – it’s written for agencies and faceless companies and doesn’t help out a personal brand like yours.

So while you can pick up advice here and there, none of these guides quite hit the target you’re aiming for.

In copywriting, it’s never good enough to have a smorgasbord of copy tips. You can’t just throw tips around and hope they’ll do their job. You ALWAYS need a framework to organize your copy techniques and form them into a full picture that ends up in results.

Without the framework, you’re wasting your time.

Effectiveness Level: 2 out of 5

2. Outsource That Shiz

You can always hire someone to develop your brand voice and give you a completed guide. All you’d have to do is follow the document they gave you.

Of course, that ain’t cheap and could cost you at least $1,000 from a professional who truly knows what they’re doing.

If you try to skimp and get someone cheap, you run the risk of wasting your money on someone who doesn’t get you the results you’re hoping for.

Outsourcing brand voice has the potential of 5/5 Effectiveness Level, but since it’s something you can (and probably should) do for yourself, I’m knocking it down to 4 /5.

3. Break the Process Down

What’s really happening when you’re building your brand voice?

Simply put: You’re pulling abstract personality traits from inside your head and mapping them out on paper so you know what they are and your audience knows what they are.

Without question.

When I first transitioned from freelancing to running my own copywriting business, I struggled to find my brand voice. I looked up the 14 brand archetypes, decided mine was the Creator, I wrote down some qualities I wanted to be known for, but you still couldn’t find ME in my copy.

I was too caught up in trying to imitate copywriters I admired, trying to follow the right steps, and trying to portray a version of myself I thought I should be.

Then my business coach lovingly told me, “I have no idea who you are when I read your content.” And that’s when I developed a simple process to find my voice.

I used a tool commonly used in the teaching world, called a mind map. Mind maps help you brainstorm in a creative, spontaneous way that’s not constrained by linear lists. It allows you to learn and ideate with a natural process that mirrors the way our brains actually think.

So I made a mind map with a brain dump of my personality traits, characteristics, attributes, flaws, reputations…anything I could think of.

From there, I narrowed it down. I chose which ones to include and strategized solid ways to do it in all my copywriting.

And at that point – all that was left was implementation.

I started using this guide I had created in every social media post and all throughout my website. After about a month of doing this consistently, I started seeing results.

I was getting clients coming to me rather than reaching out to them. I was getting comments like,

“Wow, this really resonated with me,”

“Love how you explained this,”

“Louder for the people in the back…” and more.

So I polished up my mind map and gave it a name: The Client Magnetizer.

I created it as a template in Canva for every biz owner to use.

Then I recorded a video walking you thorough with some basic instructions and tips for making the most of it.

It’s now available for free to anyone having trouble standing out and being themselves online.

Access the guide here to work your way through the process that helped me build authority with my ideal clients who sign up with me consistently.

Effectiveness Level: 5/5

Am I just rating it high because I made it?

Nah, girl.

Trust me, I’m not afraid to admit when something I’ve made isn’t working. But this Client Magnetizer really works. It takes an abstract idea like “brand voice” and turns it into a tangible guide that you can use on a daily basis to connect and resonate with the people you want to work with.
